Maple is a powerful program for doing symbolic algebra, numerical calculation, and plotting of graphs, so using this program allows students to spend more time on modeling and interpreting results. Maple also has a text editor, which makes it feasible to require students to explain their results in writing. The design of Maple documents suitable for EE teaching is discussed; a standard format, including bibliographical information, is recommended for easier use.

Computer facilitated generalized coordinate transformations of partial differential equations with engineering applications

Partial differential equations (PDEs) play an important role in describing many physical, industrial, and biological processes. Their solutions could be considerably facilitated by using appropriate coordinate transformations. There are many coordinate systems besides the well-known Cartesian, polar, and spherical coordinates. In this article, we illustrate how to make such transformations usin...

Cryptography Adapted to the New European Area of Higher Education

A new experience for teaching Cryptography to engineering students is shown. The aim is to give them a better understanding of secure and cryptographic algorithms by using Maple software, in a graduate-level course. In this paper we discuss how to structure, define, and implement a web-based course as a part of the traditional classes, according to the convergence of the European Higher Educati...

Bringing Games into the Classroom in Teaching Quality Control*

The increasing pressures from students, industry, government, and accreditation organizations demand a paradigm shift in engineering education to turn the focus of education from instruction to learning. In the course of Quality Control at the University of Manitoba, the concepts and principles of Total Quality Management (TQM) are usually taught through a series of lectures. Given the fact tha...

Solving of non-stationary heat transfer in a plane plate

In this paper we present software application destined for study of heat transfer problems that is a part of education of subject Process engineering taught at the Tomas Bata University in Zlin. The application we use as a teaching aid for calculation and visualization of temperature distribution in the plane plate body during its heating or cooling. Calculation accuracy of our application enab...
